Hosts for the meeting included Leo Nestor, William Tierney, and Robert Grogan of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception; Gerald Muller, St. Matthew Cathedral; and Haig Mardirosian, St. Thomas More Cathedral, Arlington. The conference was attended by fifty-one of the one hundred members representing seventy cathedrals.

Musical presentations and working sessions included a broad agenda of topics: 25 years of liturgical and musical growth since participation of the laity became renewed in Roman Catholic liturgy; briefings by executives of three major national bodies: the Federation of Diocesan Liturgical Commissions, the International Committee on English in the Liturgy, and the Bishops’ Committee on Liturgy – CRCCM indicated its interest in consulting with these bodies relating to matters of music and musical setting of texts; a panel discussion by a distinguished group of composers and conductors including Russell Woollen, Robert Twynham, Theodore Marrier, and Paul Salamunovich on the subject of the evolving musical and liturgical language in the middle twentieth century; options in music for the Rite of Ordinations; and the application of computer technology in music notation.

CRCCM members enjoyed a tour of Washington National Cathedral and a lecture by Richard Wayne Dirksen, canon precentor and composer par excellence. Conferees also attended the premiere of Robert Twynham’s Chrism Mass (commissioned by CRCCM). The performance was in Baltimore, where we visited both the Old Cathedral and the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. Ongoing CRCCM initiatives realized included a statement on worship space acoustics, letters to BCL and FDLC on the need for guidelines in the television broadcasting of liturgical celebrations, gathering of resource information for the selection of pipe organs for churches, and a study of relations and working principles with musicians’ unions, ASCAP, etc. Each cathedral choir and host musician made music for the conference. This included performances in the Crypt Church of the National Shrine by the resident Shrine choir directed by Leo Nestor; a mid-day performance by the Choir of St. Matthew’s Cathedral directed by Gerald Muller; and an evening concert by the Choir of the Cathedral of St. Thomas More, Arlington, directed by Haig Mardirosian. The Conference enjoyed superb hospitality, with receptions at the National Shrine, the Apostolic Nunciature, dinner at "Chez Mardirosian," and a festive closing banquet in Arlington.
